I'm a triathlete who can't swim, also known as a duathlete. Love riding my bike and running in the hills...

I live, work and play in Cardiff, Wales, UK.

Coming up are my personal and mostly useless ramblings on duathlon, cycling and running.

When I'm not training or drowning in a pool, I like to surf, play guitar, go to gigs, read, drink wine, brew real ale, and keep up with the latest scientific thinking. Love music and always on the lookout for new bands. Bit of a sci-fi geek too - BSG rocks!

Spend far too much time drinking coffee and tinkering with Java code and SIP for a living, so there might be some tech shit in here too.

And once or twice a year, I head to the Alps for some snowboarding, which sadly, is never enough...

Sorry about the Edgar Allen Poe pun in the blog "Title"; I have no imagination.

Wine of the Week: Promenade Cotes du Rhone Villages 2010

With the snowboarding trip to France, another French wine is called for! I like a good Cotes du Rhone.

A great wine this, bottled by Les Celliers de Beauregard, but I can’t find any info on them… so no idea where this wine actually came from. Shame. Because it’s a good one.

It’s quite a biggy at 13.5%abv. You wouldn’t know though. Nice and smooth. It’s only when half the bottle disappears and you get that Ozzie Shiraz ‘head’ coming on… ;-)

Tasting notes:

Blackberries, Cherries, leather, smooth, violets, pepper, surprisingly soft tannins (honest!). Very drinkable for such a big wine.

French bread & camambert and a Lasagne for me with this guy tonight. Works well.

A decent bottle of CDR for under £10/$16.

4/5.

Ryan Waiste. We picked up a generator and lights a bit ago, this hip session was the second time we used them and it was pretty awesome. Were all really excited for all the possibilities of night shoots this year.

Good tempo run with the club tonight.
My only bit of “speed allowed” during the base. ;-)
Mostly in the lower end of tempo zone (87% MaxHR), but the mile splits were faster than normal. My running economy must be getting better…

Wine of the Week: Mont Tauch Minervois 2010

I was a big fan of the Mont Tauch Cab Sauv, so thought I’d give the Minervois a go.

Not bad. Another modern ripe wine from the Languedoc. Black cherry and redcurrant, vanilla spice, and a fair whack of tannin - not a wine to be drunk alone! Needs a good BBQ or winter casserole. There’s definitely some herbs in this wine too - reminds of herbs de Provence.

Not as good as the Cab Sauv I’m afraid. Tannins were a bit too sharp for my palate. I’ve no doubt the wine will mellow with a few years of aging, but I can’t wait that long… ;-)
