Wine of the Week: Rigal 'The Original' Malbec 2010
My mum gave me this wine for my birthday last month. Can’t remember the last time I tasted Malbec… I think it was with a good sirloin steak at a French restaurant in Cardiff, back in, well, err, September. Shocking. Shocking because I’ve not drunk any Malbec since then, and doubly shocking that I’ve not eaten out since then (curries are not included). Money is too...

Track Time
Good little sharpener session on the track tonight ready for the Welsh XC Champs this weekend:
(1000 -> 800 -> 600) x 2 - all with 200 recoveries:
1000 - 3:16
800 - 2:46
600 - 1:59
1000 - 3:26 *
800 - 2:43
600 - 2:00
My group worked well together tonight.
*Think the 2nd 1000 was a bit slow… I didn’t lead that one! ;-)

Hop & Grape Best Bitter
A lovely best bitter from the Hop & Grape.
Tastes like Theakston’s Best Bitter! That good. I used to drink Theakston’s by the bucket load when studying at Sheffield University.
Added some hop pellets to this brew and results were excellent - nice bit of tangy dry aftertaste. Very refreshing. My Dad liked this one the best too.
BIG head on this one after 6 weeks in the bottle....

Powering up
Good ergo sesh tonight.
5x4mins @300w with 4min recoveries.
Settling at 106rpm for my sweet spot this year; it was 100rpm last year. No idea why, just feels right.
Power going up by 5w every 4 weeks by the looks.
315w by May then! ;-)

Another cold ball-busting track sesh tonight
Temperature was 2c but the 10mph wind made it feel a lot colder. I’m crap running below 5c… my body goes into some kind of self-preservation mode!
Sesh:
1200m -> 200m recovery -> 4 x (600m with 200m recovery) -> 1200m
Legs were fine until 4th 600m and then they went. Still tired after Sunday’s long run I think. Times were consistent apart from the last 1200m -...

Wine of the Week: J P Chenet Languedoc...
An impulse buy this one. Just wanted something cheap and cheerful to throw in the Spag Bol and for drinking whilst cooking it! The funky shaped bottle had nothing to do with it…
Good decision. Felt bad feeding it to the saucepan.
Surprisingly smooth and easy to drink for a £6/$10 bottle. A modern Languedoc wine made from Grenache and Syrah from J P Chenet. This is a strong one too - 13%...

Swimming: make or break time...
Latest mail from my swim coach after me asking about adding more speed/distance to my sessions…
The progression is a good one so you could rotate 4 x 400 one week, then 2 x 800m the second week and 1500m for the third with a recovery week to follow. That would be a great progression for a long session focus. Now is the time for you to read this: www.swimsmooth.com/training.html I want you...

Back on track
The [re]base building hiatus is over. Time to get some speed back into the legs!
Tough little bugger of a session at Leckwith track tonight. Cold night too, -1c !
200 400 600 800 1000 800 600 400 200 - all with 200m jog recoveries.
Doesn’t sound much, but from the last 600m, things really start to hurt…
Although I’ve not run faster...

Wine of the Week: Promenade Cotes du Rhone...
With the snowboarding trip to France, another French wine is called for! I like a good Cotes du Rhone.
A great wine this, bottled by Les Celliers de Beauregard, but I can’t find any info on them… so no idea where this wine actually came from. Shame. Because it’s a good one.
It’s quite a biggy at 13.5%abv. You wouldn’t know though. Nice and smooth. It’s only...
